SHOW ME/TELL ME

SHOW ME:

* Show me / explain how you would check that the power steering is working before starting a journey.

If the steering becomes heavy the system may not be working properly. Before starting a journey two simple checks can be made:

1.                 Gentle pressure on the steering wheel, maintained while the engine is started, should result in a slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate.

2.                 Alternatively turning the steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assistance is working.

*Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.

Identify dipstick, describe check of oil against the min/max markers

*Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level.

Identify high/low level markings on the tank

*Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear.

Demonstrate by applying the parking brake so when fully applied it secures itself and is not at the end of its working travel

(Make sure you secure car with foot brake while demonstrating)

*Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the level.

Identify reservoir and explain how to check level. (On the mini you also have a yellow flashing light inside the car that indicates screen wash level is low)

*Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.

Identify reservoir and check against high/low markings.

*Show me how you would check that the horn is working (off road only)

Check is carried out by using the horn.

*Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working.

Apply the hazard warning button inside car which will cause all 6 indicator lights to flash on the car. Then walk around the whole car and check each light.

*Show me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working.

Ignition needs to be turned on for this – Switch full lights on and then walk around vehicle and check each light.

TELL ME:

*Tell me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this vehicle.

Operate brake pedal, make use of reflection in windows, garage door etc OR ask someone to help you.

*Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.

Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set off. Vehicle should not pull to one side.

*Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this vehicle and how tyre pressures should be checked.

Manufacturer’s guides, use a reliable gauge, check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold, don’t forget spare tyre and remember to refit valve caps.

*Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure they have sufficient tread, depth and their general condition is safe to use on the road.

No cuts or bulges, 1.6mm of tread across the central ¾ of the tyres breadth and around the entire outer circumference.

You will be asked only TWO of any of the above. Please take the time to learn everything listed. I will go over all the show me/tell me with you several times as your practical test approaches.
